ZOMGFTA Updates
9.12.2008

Errr.
Uh. Hey guys.

Okay. I'm not going to go into detail about what's happened these past several months, or give any excuses as to why the site was basically abandoned, because giving excuses is lame. And I have to get running to work, so I'm going to make this quick.

We were going to start scanlating Fullmetal Alchemist again starting with this month's chapter, but the scans are horrendous. If any of you could point us towards good scans (stuff of the quality of scans in previous years, and, like 1200px height?), we would be immensely, eternally grateful.

I have faith in you guys. Now go.

Fuck off. Once you abandon the site for 6 months everybody leaves. We've found new scanslators

To the ZOMGFTA team: XD Yay! Welcome back~ You've been missed. :3

Glad to know that you're all still willing to go on. I've looked around a bit, but I think it'll take some time before even an MQ raw shows up online somewhere. > < I'll keep looking for them though.

To the comment above: I don't know what's your problem but frankly I don't see a need to discourage good scanlators if they want to do it. In my opinion, the other scanlations so far are just legitable (I appreciate the efforts but...) and I think ZOMGFTA scanlations is still the number one best when it comes to scanlated FMA.

@ Anonymous: Hello, welcome to zomgfta.com. Thank you for waltzing into the home of ZOMGFTA and welcoming us back so kindly. ♥

@ Yamamoto-Kou: Thanks for the help, and for your support. ♥!!

I always roped that you'd get back to work someday, like checking on the site everyday! And now knowing it'll be soon just makes me really happy!!!

OPS, the hope part got all wrong, like some kinda rope! Oh well! Shit happens!!!

Wow!! It's so great to have you back!! I'm going to spread the word!!
You've been missed, really. :)
If I find anything for you, I'll let you know, just as everyone I guess (well, not everyone, according to the first comment...).
Anyway... welcome back!!~ :D

Yay, your back. Am I the only one who actually waited for Zomgfta to start scanlating again. I seriously haven't read FMA since you guys took a break.

So let me get this right, you start from where FMA is right now? Any plans to do the chapters between then and now, or is it too early to ask.

I know you should probably get back in the rhytm first.

@ Kerath: Yeah, for the moment we're hoping to start with this month's chapter, if we get our hands on some decent enough scans.

I do believe there is a plan to go back and do the chapters we skipped - in fact, Cynthia and I were talking last night, and it turns out that she accidentally bought a second copy of volume 18, and I accidentally bought a second copy of 19. So we decided to use those for HQ releases of those chapters. Eventually. (Volumes 18 and 19 don't cover nearly all the chapters we've missed, but we'll probably do HQs of the others also.)

In the meantime, if you're wanting to read our scanlation of 87 right when it comes out, I suggest you read up on other people's scanlations of the chapters we've skipped. XD (Go to Onemanga or something.)

It's out!

MQ FMA Raw~ (1200px in height)

It's much better than the LQ but it doesn't include the colour pages about the anime. Ah well, we'll live. ;p

You're back! You're back! You should already know how much people love you guys.
I've been stalking your LJs and trying to keep up with the chapter every month, but it just isn't the same.
(Maybe now I'll actually be able to remember to go back to the forum. T_T My attention span does not fare well without stimulation.)
@yamamoto-kou: You are also amazing.

WELCOME BACK! *HUGGLES*
Seeing as how I'm in tokyo, it would be a dream come true to scan fma for you guys and post it....however i'm not sure if i'll have enough time when school starts

however i will defintely try my best to make it happen! I've always wanted to help you guys in some way!

i'll update my LJ just for you!

p.s.- what are your thoughts on the new anime?

Seeing as how I'm in Tokyo right now i would love to somehow each month buy square enix (hope i got the name right) and scan it using the school computers....

I can shoot for October, but i'm not sure if i'll have enough time....however i will definately try and see if its possible!

I'll update my LJ just for you!

AND WELCOME BACK!

p.s.- so what are your thoughts on the second anime?

Yaay. I'm glad you're back! You all were always the first to get scans up, and with the manga at this point, I'm dying to read what happens next! I don't know where to get HQ scans though... If I find any, I'll let you know!

@ Yamamoto-Kou: YOU ARE AWESOME. THANK YOU. <3<3<3<3!!

@ windgoddess688: Aww, you really don't have to go to that trouble, as it seems that we still have the MQ scans coming in eventually. :D <3 But if you REALLY want to... I'll see if I can get my manga-scanning tutorial up before next month.

And in regards to the new anime - if it's a faithful adaptation of the manga (I haven't personally seen any official confirmation one way or the other, but I honestly can't fathom what ELSE the anime would be about), then FFFFFFFFFFF YES AWESOME. MORIKUBO SHOUTAROU AS LING PLZ PLZ PLZZZZZZZ

Ahh you guys are back! I'd check every so often for updates and today... *squeal*

Welcome back, we've all missed you :D

Oh man, if you guys are going to start up again that would be brilliant. It's been a bit shit on the scanlation front ever since you stopped.

Yay~! Welcome back! I look forward to seeing you in action again! :D

Yay, now we'll know whether the Donkey Kong/Lion King thing is from a translator joke or something Arakawa actually said!

(Plz make it clear, I'm afraid of Arakawa actually making such an obvious reference...)

Woah, when you say new anime, you mean there's a new FMA anime coming up?!

Also, yay, so you are planning to do all the chapters you missed. Happy.

uh, I'm the anon who posted links to the RAWs of chapters 84 and 86, but I kinda messed up, and page 25 of chapter 86 looks, uh, really bad.
Better version of page 25:

(would've given a Photobucket link, but Photobucket would resize it)

I wikipedia'd and animenewsnetworked that FMA anime thing, and it seems there are indeed rumors floating. Interesting.

As for manga, can anyone tell me which scanlator besides zomgfta is best and is available downloadable where? So I can catch up.

@ Junodog: Generally I prefer to refrain from discussing rival scanlators on our site, as it seems kind of gauche, but I'll make an exception in this case.

I wrote this out at work, and didn't have the manga to reference, and I'm too lazy too look it up now, BUT... if I recall correctly, Ed calls Heinkel and the other guy (his name escapes me) "Lion-ossan" and "Gori-san" in the Japanese version ("ossan" being a somewhat derogatory term for an elder man, and "gori" being short for "gorilla"). As fas as I know, they are not pop culture references, but I can understand the logic in translating them as such - the names are supposed to sound dorky and stupid, and annoying to those on the receiving end. And what's more dorky, stupid, and annoying than pop culture references?

I wouldn't call those names "translator jokes," per se - to me "translator jokes" are more like in-jokes along the lines of Bradley's aspirations of being a Broadway star, Hohenheim being Superman, our various Pokemon crossovers, or Pride being Selim.

Oh wait, that last one isn't a joke anymore.

Anyway, rather than calling "Donkey Kong" and "Lion King" translator jokes, I'd call it "creative adaptation." This is not something that I disapprove of; on the contrary, I applaud any translator that will take the effort to think of an acceptable equivalent term, rather than sticking with a clunky literal translation that often disrupts the flow of dialogue.

tl;dr: Ed does not call them "Donkey Kong" and "Lion King" in the Japanese version, but translating them as such is not necessarily a bad thing. :)

I didn't include this in my previous comment, as it was already getting kind of lengthy, but I do somewhat question their use of names that are so heavily influenced by pop culture. The reason for this is only partly because the names weren't originally references to pop culture, and also because such references would likely not exist in the Hagaren world.

"Lion King" is debatable, I suppose - I think it's safe to say that video games do not exist in Amestris, but, as we found out when Ed cooked his boot, movies do. I can't remember exactly what movie it was that Ed referenced (it was a real one), or how old it was, so I can't say exactly how likely it would be that an animated movie from 1995 would exist in their 1914 (I suppose it's 1915 now?) world. I'd say it's not too likely, though.

On the other hand, I seem to remember that they've made references and comments even in the Japanese version that seemed unlikely to be used in their world/time. I can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head, aside from Hohenheim calling Pride a hikikomori, but I don't know if that term is really something that was coined so recently, or if it was used in the past in other contexts. (Ah, actually, I just did a tiny bit of research, and the term was coined by a modern Japanese psychologist. So yeah, hikikomori is a somewhat strange term to be using in 1915 Amestris.)

In any case, I remember several times while reading the RAWs and coming across something someone said that made me go, "Wait, did they really just use that term?" So the use of pop culture references in translation can't be criticized too harshly.

Cynthia and I haven't decided what we'll be translating the names as yet, though. Prooooobably not Donkey Kong and Lion King. XD

Wow, that was a lot longer than I thought it would be. XD

But yeah, I'm usually fine with pop culture references (the James Bond and Star Wars ones towards the beginning are hilarious), but it's the ones that are glaringly obvious that kill it for me.

I would say more on the subject but this comic:
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1230
just completely derailed my chain of thought.

Oh yeah. I just used translator jokes as a vague, all-encompassing term because I don't know anything about that field. And I mostly just wanted to know if that was really in the RAWs. And I'm going to stop there before I say something incredibly stupid, because I tend to do that when I'm rambling.

@Umeko: Just glad I could help~

Now go do your magic. <3

*Salutes*

Glad to have you back on board. May you recieve one thousand blessings.

okay, another translation question. A few chapters ago Grumman said/thought/didn't think some things... is that more clear in the real chapter than in the translation? Were we supposed to understand what happened?

Hey, hope Cynthia had fun in Japan! A few of her CNU friends were hoping to get in touch with her so if she could get in touch with us just to tell us how she's been doing, that would be great! Thanks!

To celebrate your return you should finally reveal your trump card in the Armstrong Pairing.. Armstrong X ???????

Yes. What is the creepiest Armstrong pairing?

So my heart beats again.

YAY.

Yes that is how I felt when I read that you two are starting up scanlating again. All the other groups are.... to say it nicely, horrible. I've missed the high quality work you guys do.

Thank you much^_^

Oh and a comment on the first person who commented - If you found someone new why do you still check back to the zomgfta webpage? ^_^ I think it's because they are the best.

Yay, that's good news! :D
I'm looking forward to those, and thanks for explaining the Donkey Kong / Lion King thingy. btw: The "other guy" is Darius. :3

Will you pick up some of your other projects later on, too? I'm especially interestzed in Juushin Enbu. As unlike Fullmetal Alchemist you're not just the best one, but also the ONLY one translating it... ;___;

Juushin Enbu, now that you mention it : D,

I actually liked it better than FMA back when both were still scanlated here. And since the anime didn't please me much, I second Greed's curiosity as to the potential status of that manga.

Yaaay! I was starting to wonder if you guys were gonna come back before the end of the series. I will be SO GLAD to read the ending in a language other than suck. It's good that you're coming back to this from hiatus, hopefully feeling like it's not a chore anymore. :D

Please appoint new mods to the forums, the old ones are long gone.

I'm not asking to be one but at least appoint some people that are usually there all of the time, I don't care who. As long as they're active

Welcome back! It's very good to hear that you guys will be scanlating FMA again, I was getting tired of the boring, suckishly translated scans from the other sites. I've especially missed your omake! D:

I hope you all enjoy scanlating again. If it feels like work, you should stop and take a break just like you did.

Again, welcome back!

Yey, you're back! (I'm glad I randomly decided to check your site today. ^^) I've missed your scans - the other ones have been enough to tide things over, but they lack the special flair that only you can give them. (Like the omakes at the end.) I look forward to your next releases! ♥

i think it's cool that you guys are all loyal to zomg and everything, but let's be honest...The other scanslator groups been doing fma for just as long now and they've been doing a great job with it...i think you guys are better doing unique projects that no one else is doing like databooks, jushin enbu or maybe something new?

So glad to have you guys back! I really loved your translations and have missed you.

For those of you that have been rude in your comments, don't come here if you are going to be like that.

I am sure a lot of people appreciate the hard work you guys put in but I am sure there are more that don't have a clue how much work it really is.

I look forward to reading your translastions!

Just to be an FMA nerd, the first reference to movies was early on when Ed was talking about the movie "The Fly", that they saw when they were kids. Kinda weirded me out and made me wonder if it was a...(there's a word for this - something that doesn't belong in the time) mistake or whatever. Clearly, Arakawa-sensei is playing with us. Um, what's up with the forum?

"(there's a word for this - something that doesn't belong in the time)"

Anachronism
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anachronism)

BTW to JE fans, Yen Press has licensed the manga, so it's not doomed to permanent obscurity.

Yay randomly checking for the first time in forever to discover good news! ^_^ I'm excited to have you back.

With due respect to the nay-sayers, FTA really does have the best translation for Hagaren (and you have all those omake!) so I'm pretty thrilled that you're returning.

I've recently acquired a flat-bed scanner, so I can scan in the October (as in, the one that comes out this weekend) chapter if you like. Mr. Scanner and I aren't best friends, but I can be very persuasive. That is, if there's still a need.

I missed you, zOMGFTA. ;w; FMA manga hasn't been the same without you guys. Good luck with getting back to scanlating!

I dont understand why you scanlate a licensed series...whatever happened to Pokemon Special?

I'm not saying this to be rude, I am a scanlator myself...and I certainly hope I won't be accused of being a jerk, just saying something I've been thinking about for a while about you guys.

Your hosting is kinda ify of late, you guys going to do anything about that? :(

I'm the first Anonymous. My point has been proved, they posted a month ago that they were gonna start scanslating again, and still we have nothing. They haven't even given any news.

Their life isn't to scanslate for me to read, but at least keep your word and do something when you say you're gonna do it.

You must be so proud of yourself for being here and pointing that out, anonymous.

Why are you still here? Go whine somewhere else.

So I guess all that talk about coming back was a load of horse shit?

Fucking communists.

1: First Anonymous is still a git, no matter what gets done or not done here. If you don't like it, and you can't offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, nobody's interested.

2: From Canada wouldn't know a Communist if one bit kir, although I can think of interesting things to do with that load of fertiliser.

3: I've missed you two awfully, and always wondered what prompted your decision. I've managed to keep up with the story irregularly, but without having a nice site like ZOMGFTA to come to every month, I found I was chapters and chapters behind! (Actually, a long read like that's kind of fun.) I look forward to whatever work you manage to complete.
